I just got the call from Angell Medical Center in Boston Ma that my dog, Ramsey, has been diagnosed with MRSA. He has been treated locally for years for chronic skin infections which would seem to clear for a short while then come raging back. They are putting him on an antibiotic and topical cream for his constant itch. I have no idea how long he has had this infection as he was treated with so many different meds prior to this diagnosis. I am hopeful this will help him but am a little aprehensive about my other two dogs contracting this from him. I have bathed Ramsey at least weekly for 3 years and wash his bedding twice a week and hope this is enough. They have assured me just keeping up the hygene I have been practicing will be sufficient. The verts are telling me to expect him to be on these meds for at least four months. Is there anyone out there who has actually licked this or am I going to have to worry about this for the rest of his life? |

Crossposted from another forum:- This is more of a warning than a discussion point, although it does raise issues like - why was there no warning on the packaging? This message came to us from Ali Taylor, Head of Welfare, Battersea DH. Quote: Yesterday one of our dog agility friends experienced a tragedy and wanted me to pass a special message along to all of my dog loving friends and family. Please tell every dog owner you know. Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mum woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly. Al... read more |

Before Rimadyl

I would like to ask what did all the vets use before Rimadyl? Why are some surgeries handing out free videos and packs of Rimadyl pills ? I have not seen the video myself, but understand that it is promoting how wonderful it is for Arthritis, I also understand that vets are supposed to discuss the side affects of this drug before giving it to the owners pets, how can they when they are handing free samples to anyone who wants to have try !!! I understand that this drug was manufactured for people and it cause internal bleeding, perforation of the gut and deaths, is this true? I know that Jean Townsend sued the drug manufacterers Phizer, and won the case, if the drug is so bad and banned for humans why are vets using it on animals ? |

I wonder if you vets can help - dogs have glands which they 'chuck-out' from, the ones I know of are 1. ontop of the skull, 2. each side about an inch below and forward of the ear-base, and 3. about an inch above the tail. I would like to know please which glands excrete from each area, or if it is all the same gland, and which gland/s they are please. I have searched through canine anatomy information and many sites but cannot find this anywhere so wonder if you could kindly fill in the blanks for me here ? thankyou |

Sunday Times - Scotland The Sunday Times December 24, 2006 Vets have all gone to the dogs In his candid exposé, Josh Artmeier reveals how today’s veterinary surgeons are hounded by neurotic pets and their ghastly owners, writes Nick Thorpe Josh Artmeier remembers the exact moment he realised he was trapped in the wrong profession. It was a dreich night at a greyhound stadium where, as duty vet, he was required to dope-test a suspiciously fast dog. “I still have recurring dreams about following this dehydrated mutt for hours with a sample jar,” recalls Scotland’s self-proclaimed antidote to James Herriot. “It seemed to epitomise my future: walking around in the rain waiting for a dog to urinate before I could go home.” To be fair, the rose-tinted spectacles had been forcibly removed a few weeks earlier as he took up his first permanent posting, replacing a colleague who had been driven to drug-addiction. “The practice flat was strewn with used nee... read more |

My dog a 6yr jrt bitch has just been diagnosed as having meningoencephalitis. She is being treated as having GME ie with prednisolone & cytosine inj over 5 mth period. Her only neurological sign was sudden blindness & absolutely nil else, tho she had multiple health problems in the 2yrs iv had her. I was wondering if anyone on this forum has any experience of this condition, or knows about it. I found the vet specialist involved was very difficult to talk to & explained little. Id be very grateful for any info to help me make the right decision for my girl. |

After my 6 1/2 year old Bernese had been off his food for a couple of weeks - normally he lives and dies for his food - I had him x-rayed today. Vet said he found numerous small tumours in his chest and thought the primary one was in the liver. But then he threw me completely in saying there was a chance it could be lungworms....and the apparent tumours are cysts or abscesses. Home I trundle with a suitcase full of Panacur granules, a truckload of antibiotics and a box of Prednisolone....for a dog which at present doesn't want to eat. My vet is a terrificly nice chap but he is young, inexperienced and clearly out of his depth. I don't want to drag my unwell dog from vet to vet but I need a competent second opinion. Could someone PLEASE recommend a specialist, or clinic, savvy in tumors - or lungworm! preferably with access to sophisticated diagnostic imaging equipment. Southwest of England preferred...but I'd travel any distance. I need names of particular people, not just ... read more |

I have three children that all have MRSA. We also have a pet rabbit that lives on the back porch and in the house. I haven't noticed any signs of the rabbit being sick, but I was wondering if the rabbit is a possible carrier of the MRSA affecting my three small children. How do I find out if my rabbit has MRSA? |

Hello, My mother was recently diagnosed with MRSA and she isnt sure about her cats? She was told she can no longer clean the litter box cause of the MRSA and also that she might have gotten MRSA from her cats or she could give MRSA to her cats. Anyone know if this is true? I have been doing tons of research and cant find anything concrete. Thanks so much Jennifer |
