Help! we just adopted a 3 yr old, 8 pound maltese ..yesterday and when we took him to our vet this morning we were told that he has a staph (mrse ) and major allergies as well, we knew about the allergies (just not the severity of them) and we were willing to get his medical stuff taken care of for him until they cleared up, but now we are told that he will need meds for the rest of his life (steroids and antibiotics)and that we should keep him away from our other very much loved maltese and that this also compromises our health as well and to top it all off my husband is due to have surgery in 3 DAYS!!!! help what do I need to do ( we have already contacted the rescue agency where we adopted him from and they said that they did not get this info from the vet or they would not have accepted him any way he will go back tomorrow and everyone in our home is very HEARTBROKEN,hes a sweet little guy but this is more than we bargained for and we simply owe more to our other dogs as well as members of our family...do I need to sanitize everything in the house? please help I dont know what to do we have all been crying for the last 6 hours. please email info@thebellamossfoundation.com
so that we can send you advise sheets confidential correspondence not here on the forum look at pets mrsa website for information on caring for an infected pet in the home or email us we can send you direct handouts.

Allergies mean that your dog has a compromised immune system and that long term antibiotic use makes MRSA more likely to develop. Usually steroids and antibiotics are not given together - make sure your vet knows about how to treat MRSA or ask for areferral to a dermotologist urgently, our expert vets can tlak directly with your vet if you like so please email us at the above address so we can arrange that for you

There is no need for you yout to abandon your dog if you practice sensible hand hygiene again I can forward you handouts on this and ask one of our infection control specialists to give you a call - I prefer you to email the above email address than leave a number here on the forum. I can also put you in touch with advise on cleaning and not you do not need to sanitise everything. You need further advise than cab be given here on the forum
info@thebellamossfoundation.com or 07860 879079 if you are in the USA see the front of pets mrsa website for the international dialling code. We need to talkw ith you direct also aboout your husbands planned surgery - please get in touch
