Propalin Syrup

My GSD has always had a very sensitive stomach and has to have a very controlled diet. For about a year now she has been on Propalin to control urinary incontinence. For the past 6 months she has been plagued with very loose stools, sometimes covered in mucas. I have read that this can be a side effect of using propalin and wondered if anyone else had encountered such problems. My dog has had all the usual tests and they have come back clear, so all I can think is that it must be this? My vet has not come across this before and I wondered if anyone else has found use of this a problem? 29225

I have never used Propalin, but I have had GSD's with highly sensitive stomachs, and ones who have delicate pancreas issues which result in mucousy stools and constant vomiting and diarhea. The answer to my sensitive tummy dogs was the raw meaty bones diet - they had no more v & d once on it, filled out weightwise, lost their nervousness and were much happier. http://www.ukrmb.co.uk Slippery Elm powder/gruel is extremely effective, especially with GSD's for some reason, so this may well be worth a try. I have a good one by GREENARK : ORGANIC ANIMAL WHOLE FOODS & HERBS BY MAIL ORDER TEL/FAX 01282 606810 ----- E-MAIL greenark@cwcom In a lot of cases sensitivites can be down to intolerances of ingredients in the diet being given. I would seriously give rawfeeding a try, specifically the RMB diet. Good luck 29226

Sounds very similar to the symptoms of colitis. The symptoms can be helped by feeding a high fibre diet and/or adding a fibre supplement to the food (nutrifibre/ protexin). Your vet should be able to advise on the use of these. Also there is another form of propalin, made by a different manufacturer called 'URILIN'. It probably has very similar ingredients to propalin but may help. 29227

Not forgetting that GSD's are very prone to digestive problems! 29244

Doesn't mucousy stools suggest the pancreas is stressed ? This is what I was told. 29245

Thanks to you all for your ideas. You have all given me some things to consider. Just to update you, I have significantly reduced the dose of Propalin syrup and increased the fibre in Kasie's diet and feed her 'little and often' as apposed to 2 larger meals a day - and so far so good - a remarkable improvement. I have also spoken to my vet again and he says although rare, he has come across other problems that may be associated with propalin, including depression. The only problem I have now is that Kasie is such a fussy eater she is reluctant to eat anything I give her that doesn't represent canned dog meat. But when she is hungry she normally admits defeat and will eat what is given to her. So at the moment I am monitoring her carefully. If her condition is reactivated then she is off for more tests. But fingers crossed. 29283

My 4 1/2 year old Border Collie was put on propalin for bladder incontinance 6 months ago. She developed an intolerance to it 5 weeks ago with severe side effects.Disorientated, panting, stopped barking, eyes dilated, depressed and many more. My vet took her off it and ensured me there were no long term effects and she would be a different dog in 2 weeks. She died 2 weeks later with kidney failure and damage. Liver failure and toxins in her blood!! 30567

I'm sorry to hear about the passing of your dog. Were the toxins from the Propalin. Was your dog being given commercial flea treatments whilst ill also? 30576

My dog was not on any commercial flea treatments whilst taking Propalin. We believe the toxins were from Propalin, there were no other explanations given to us. She was not taking any other medication. 30578

Have started my 3 yr old Jack Russell bitch on Propalin due to dripping urine when she is relaxing. She has only started taking 2ml x 3 times (3 days ago) but has already had d & v. It does seem to have improved her problem but I'm worried about the side effects and i'm only giving it to her once a day now. 30681

You are giving a massively excessive dose. The correct dose is 0.1ml/5kg bodyweight three times daily. The dose you are giving is for a 100kg dog!! Stop the treatment immediately and take your dog to the vet. Side-effects of an overdose like this can be high blood pressure amongst other things (nausea and vomiting too) and careful monitoring of your dog is required 30682

Apologies, the dose I was giving her was .2 ml x 3 times daily, but did not give her any at all yesterday as she was still having diarrhoea. Will give her .2ml tonight and see how she goes tomorrow. 30692
