my orthopeadic specialists showed me journal articles referencing that over 90% of internal fixation when removed and cultured has infection that either did, or would have eventually caused bone malunion(fracture never healing)or bacterial osteoporosis(holey bones prone to future fracture and damage). Mine was just that...slipped on the ice last January, internal fixation 7-in plate 17 screws pins to repair and open tib-fib- and triple maleolar(little ankle bones) fracture. 5 months later major pain, fractures healing so slow it was hard to see any improvement on x-ray. Then new fractures began all the while never showing redness heat swelling(signs of infection) 7 practices 13 consultations before somebody finally caught the infection they enden up removing my entire ankle, cartlige, 7 cm of my tibia, i now have 21 pins and proximal tibial corticotomy, still struggling w infection...anyway long story short: don't let anyone leave metal in your body! |

hi all i have asked my surgeon why cant he fix my tibia with plates n screws . he tells me that this would get infected and i would be in real trouble .... this seems crazy to me as i have had metal wires and pins in my leg for 14 months and 8 month before that and the bone never got infected . so why would plates n screws do any worse ???? look at BARRY SHEEN he had tons of metal in his legs for decades many people do . so why not me ? if anyone has any clues to this please let me know .. also has anyone done bone transporting ????? ithere must be a solution to this other that re framing in an ilizarov for anther long term or transtibial amputation .. the must be another way ? kind regards dave chapman |

Thanx for your replies Dave and Alex im starting to get my head around the idea that i will be able to straighten my leg, and get movement back in my ankle/foot with lots of physio. My doc gave me some antibiotics which has minimised the pain in my knee dramatically so now i am doing as much excersise as i can.. Id say that the pinsites were probably infected. My xrays look really good apparentley although to me it looks like there is just a big gap between the bones haha. Alex I have seen the full length ilizarov on a person in a picture and it was enough to make me wince and consider myself lucky i only got it on my lower leg. Im hoping to get the frame off and get back to some sunshine and windy roads in Australia.. Just hoping i'll be able to shift gear. Take care and thanks. |

Hi guys its me again, I have just read through my last topic and realised that i didnt word it properly.. i still have my lizzy on! it has been on ever since september but have only recentley had my last ring put on so i can start stretching it.. sorry for my mistake.. maybe i need an editor.. haha. Still I only wrote that yesterday and the pain in my pinsites is really getting me down, im going to suggest removing 2 of the pins/wires to my doctor. Then maybe I could do more physio more often cause im scared that my leg will not straighten in the future. To Dave Chapman.. have you sought another opinion, I read your story and i really sypathise for you. I hope some luck will come your way soon. I also have your problem where i have not got union in my tibia where they shortened it and know what it feels like to... not feel healed, I am currentley using the bone stimulator and im hoping that it does the trick. Ps. What blade was it mate, I just got rid of my 96 900, I did my dama... read more |

hi all just popped in to post a update im now under professor marsh .. and he told me the leg is now showing definite signs of healing bone is clearly crossing the gap to the point they have now placed me in a Sacramento bellow knee type cast . im not counting my chickens at this stage due to past disappointments but its looking hopeful . it seems that my leg has suddenly come to life since my ilizarov has been removed . god i hope it keeps healing this would be like liberation to me after 3 years . they have told me to walk on the leg as much as i can . its a bit worrying as my leg feels very fragile and aches alot at the fracture site . i will know more in six weeks when i return for more xrays . i hope this is not another disappointment . but i have seen the ghostly images of new bone around the fracture and the black line is turning grey |

Thanks for your reply Jenny, I read about your story and really felt for you. Im going to my doc tomorrow and im guna ask him if we can remove 2 of the pins, i know that 1 may be ok butthe other is of more importance.. Im also goin to my 1st out of hospital physio on friday and i hope to hear good things there.. Its a pain cause I believe if the pinsites wernt bothering me.. just the 2 than physio would be much easier. In any case i havnt straightened my leg fully for only bout 1. months so i think im guna have to bite the the bullet and keep ripping up myself on the pins so as to not fall behind with physio. As you know the pain is excrusiating. Have you looked into the soft tissue operation? I believe it helps in getting more movement in with people in your case. So you reckon you got some scars ay? Where can i post my pics? I got some nice pics that may make you feel better about yours. I had a rotational skin flap to cover my wounds. But its like you said, i dont care about th... read more |

Hi guys, I wanted to see if there was anyone out there who has limited or restricted muscle movement? I had a bike accidant where i broke my femur, open tib/fib and ankle in september 07. Femur is pinned and ankle screwed and they seem ok, I had a ilizarov on my lower leg, which was shortened by approximately 60mm, this 'break' has still not healed and i am using an ultrasonic wave device to stimulate bloodflow around that join. When i had the ilizarov on my lower leg I was getting better and could straighten my leg, then we began stretching, which involved fitting another ring ontop off the already existing frame and winding it apart every day, since fitting that last ring I cannot straighten my leg and if i try i incuur what could only be described as excrusiating pain. partly due to the pinsites ripping my skin and partly because the muscle has stiffened up too much.. I know that physio should have started straight after the stretching op but i left it awhile and now it seems ... read more |

I've just had an appointment with my consultant this morning and he said my frame can come off ... on Monday!! I'm not quite sure if I am excited or nervous. I have to go in and have it removed under a general as the pins at the top of my leg are so big (and to have some metal work out of my foot) My physiotherapist wants to see me on the Tuesday!! At least he can help convince me that I do want to stand up and try weight bearing. Seems there is no rest for the wicked lol. |

I was wondering if anyone else was encountering problems trying to return to work with a frame on? I work in the civil service and was expecting that returning to work would be a very simple procedure ... however it is turning out very differently. I feel I'm being positively discriminated against, I can't work until I've got the right chair (even though I am in a wheelchair for the moment!), desk, foot stool and even the right sized mouse! No one cared what mouse I had before my accident ... so why is it an issue now? I have a broken leg, not a broken hand! My manager informed the health and saftey department about me in August! Three months later I am still waiting for them to arrange things, quite frankily I'm quite disgusted that the government couldn't arrange things for someone with a broken leg quicker than that. (God only knows how long it would have taken them if, heaven forbid I'd lost a leg or was going to be in a wheelchair permanently.) I'm just so annoyed! Tha... read more |
