Knee/pin site pain

Hi everyone, I had my frame put on four weeks ago, I snapped my tibia and fibia in an ice-skating accident (foot faced the wrong way, oops), everything has been going really well so far, I managed to walk on one crutch after two weeks and a little without crutches after three weeks. Yesterday the pin on the knee joint (on the inside leg) started stinging and now it has gone so that my knee is swollen and every time I move it feels like my knee joint is popping out, also the pin site is incredibly sensitive and is trying to grow up my pin (nice). Has anyone else had a similar experience? Its a nightmare that I don't actually know anyone who has had one as well!!! Jen x |

I had a fixator last year to correct a misaligned tibia's. I had one on my right leg for just over 4 months and my left leg for almost 3 months. so I have decided to present a speech at my college about fixators, to inform my classmates on fixators if anyone would like to share their story I would be glad to include it in my speech. I can be reached at Bhansen5@student.ccbcmd.edu |

Hi all, just found this site. I had a serious accident 3 years ago, I lost my left leg below knee and my right leg has healed bent inwards just below the knee. I'm going to have an lizarov frame fitted on Monday and I have no clear of idea what to expect. I'm told it will take from a few weeks to a few months to heal and to expect some pain. My worry is that my prosthetist has told me under NO circumstances to be hopping around or bearing all my weight on my false leg, and my consultant has told me that I will need to put a little weight through my broken leg to encourage it to heal, in other words, I'll be expected to bear most of my weight on my false leg. Has anyone else been in this situation? |

when i was 11 (7years ago) i started limping,i had a slipped upper apithesis(ball in hip socket slips) it happened to the left...i had it pinned and it was fine.then it happened to the right...it slipped 75% and they wasnt able to fix it. i had 6 operations but still not fixed.they reffered me to sheffield childrens hospital and in 2006 i had the frame put on my hip.by this time my right hip ball had totally disintigrated and my leg was 7cm shorter.i was in so much pain.i had the frame on and it was hell.i wasnt prepared at all for the pain that it caused.it would have been better if i had spoken to someone with experience with this frame...eg another child.but the doctors didnt help with that.i was in and out of hospital and on morphine, also was on 8different types of painkillers.but they didnt help.on antibiotics for the whole 5months due to constant infection.i got very depressed.i wasnt myself at all.i had the frame off last february.and now my leg has got shorter again and im ... read more |

wow i thought it rough! 14 months in 16 months to +/-12 weeks of iv antibiotics 4/7 surgeries complete hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt and pain that is indescribable! I have never been a negative person and I'm getting lost in all this...how do you do it ? How do you get out of bed knowing that today might be worse than yesterday or thew same if you're lucky. My family doesn't even recognise me anymore much less want to be around me. I just had my 30th birthday in the hospital because my bone infection has spread to soft tissue. How are you all dealing? how do you survive this crap and not be consumed by iit and all the consequences of it. This affects every thing, every person, every pet, every interaction in my life. I don't like the person I am right now i'm seeing a counselor, i'm on anti-depressants..I'm not sure I can do this anymore. every day i struggle not to seek out a doc. that will just lop my leg off and be done with it? How are you all coping? please anything ... read more |

Please see the sites below for some natural ways to aid your body in healing. I had the procedure done on my right leg(tibia/fibula)5 yrs ago. I used qi-gong exercises including deep diapragm breathing techniques, as well as all supplements I could get my hands to help heal the bones. I was supposed to wear the apparatus for 6-8 months but was well enough to have it removed at the 5 month mark. No infections or complications other than some small nerve damage on my inner ankle from one of the pins... If you are in dire strats and not healing, please seek out an qi gong master in your area... If it's a matter of life or death for you or a limb qi gong will amp up your bodies ability to heal and could make all of the difference. http://www.naturalhealthweb.com/articles/Williams17.html http://lesann.tripod.com/healing%20fra... read more |

Hey, my name is Scott Maxwell, I was in a motorcycle accident in August, broke my clavicle, lost my spleen, compound fractured my femur, tibia and fibula. They actually found my tibia in my riding boot. Originally they put a tubular external fixator on the lower half of my right leg. After two blood infections, a bone infection, and removal of an inch and a half of bone, the bones are still not fusing. I have been transferred to a specialist of specialists who has set my surgery date for January 23. He will be removing my tubular external fixator and replacing it with the Ilizarov... Because of my missing spleen I am at greater risk for infection, and therefore a bigger chance of losing my leg... Anyone have a similar experience? |

Hey Dave, and anyone that underwent stretching their tib/fib.. did you have problems with strightening your knee when you had your top ring put on or through the stretching period? I was fine until i had my top ring put on and then my knee couldnt straighten and it is getting worse now im stretching it. I have started physio and am trying my best to straighten the leg with excercises.. I expect it will take time and lots of physio and pain but so long as i will be able to straighten it in the future i will be happy. I have seen other people in my situation and they have good movement in their knee although there painfull. cheers, hopefully only another 45days of stretching...only, sux hey. |

Hi guys hope all is well, I read the topic about plating/ metal work in the lower leg.. I know there are heaps of problems with tibia/ fibula bones not healing roght, Why cant the tibia just have a pin driven down the guts of it and maybe cut out a bit of a v section between the 2 were you could bone graft them together? Ive always thought about this. I have a tib that hadnt healed over the first 3 months of the ilizarov it was where it was cut and i lost 6omm there. I was told that the reason that these bones didnt join to each other was that it was a heavy shock site. I am now using a bone stimulator on that site and im hoping that the bones are fusing, Further up my tib i am stretching itand it is oing relatively well now, we had to recut my fib which joined itself unexpectedly and caused problems. I have a pin in my femur and that seems common practise why is it not in the tibia? Im not really worried bout my fibula so much. Im not a doctor but its something that has kept me up ... read more |
