Hello, I had a TSF applied to my left tibia 4 weeks ago. I am now walking on crutches, but can not bear weight much at all without them. Pain is still a significant factor. Does this sound normal for someone four weeks past surgery? Suzy |

I have just has my TSF removed from my tib after 4 months (amazing, I can tell you). I have now been put into plaster from my foot to just below the knee - this is on for 4 weeks. I just want to recommend company who manufacture and sell plaster covers - as getting one of these means I can shower totally normally. http://www.limboproducts.com/ Their customer service is fantastic and the product brilliant!! Good luck and best wishes to all TSF wearers! |

hi everybody. I'm an orthopaedic resident here in the Philippines. I would like to ask anyone, what metallic component do you use for the Ilizarov rings itself? Hoping to receive prompt response from you. Thank you. |

I had surgery last year around August for my right femur which took 6 months to fully heal from. This year I have to have another one done on my tibia where they have to put a frame on my leg known as a taylor spatial frame. Right now I'm going to college; im into directing and need to be at school this year as much as possible. that and i have to get back and forth to school and other places as well. Can anyone help me to understand the aftermath of this surgery because i don't want any surprises and i don't want the next 4-6 months of my life in ruins. I just wanna know if it'll affect me driving, the pain i'll be in and other things like that. |

I had surgery and fixator put on my lower left leg 9 days ago and the pain is just as intense as when i left the hospital. I'm taking as many pain meds and muscle relaxers as i can. They don't help. i have not started extending it yet, that will begin in a few days. my question is will this pain ease up any or am i going to have to deal with this? |

Hi all, I'm due to have a femoral ilizarov fitted in Aug in the UK. I broke my femur in a car accident twenty years ago and have a loss of 4cm and an external rotation which hopefully the lizzie will cure! I'm trying to read up and gather all the info and tips I'll need in advance. Can anyone advise how big a femoral fixator is? All the pics I see are tib/fib lizzies. If anyone has or has had one, how difficult is it to get around with one on your femur? Is sleeping difficult, any other day to day issues or tips you could share? Thanks in advance! Darren |

Hi, I am due to have a fixator put on my right femur in the near future. I was involved in a car accident that smashed both of my legs. The left leg has healed (as much as it is going to) but right leg has a bit to go. Has anyone else had a frame on without having a good leg to rely on? Am worried I wont be able to get around as I can only stand for a maximum of 5 mins on my good leg in any one go. |

My daughter had surgery a couple of weeks ago and has a fixator on her leg. In the last few days she has had unbearable pain down the back of the leg. Has anybody had the same pain? What did you do? I cannot give her anymore painkillers than she is already having. |

I am considering the Ilizarov fixator. I was born with bow legs. I am now 5o years old and have arthritis in my left knee. I have read quite abit about this procedure and it sounds like this would help with that. Does anyone know approximately what the out of pocket cost is if my insurance company doesn't want to cover it. Thank you for your help |

My name is Sandi Dheensa and I am a student at University of Nottingham and a former Ilizarov wearer! I posted some information here a while ago about my Health Psychology Masters' research, which aims to investigate the psychological outcomes of having had an external fixator, such as an Ilizarov or Taylor Spatial Frame. I have now uploaded a questionnaire that aims to find out how coping styles and how your sense of control influence the psychological consequences of having had a frame. If anyone is willing to help, please copy and paste this link, which will take you to the questionnaire, into your web browser. http://www.eSurveysPro.com/Survey.aspx?id=ee7f62ba-0900-44c3-a4e4-f07170d608ea More information is provided on the first page of the questionnaire. YOU HAVE TO HAVE BEEN AT LEAST 18 YEARS OLD WHEN THE FRAME WAS REMOVED (sorry for those that this exclud... read more |

Hi All, I'm due to have lengthening and straitiening to my femure and my tib/fib. The surgeon is going to do the op at the end of the year (to let me have a holiday first - kind man!) but I'd like to know if anyone has had both their upper and lower leg done at the same time - If so what is this like? Also can anyone give me an idea of how long I'm likely to be off work - i work in an office but have a long journey to get here. unfortunately my husband is at uni so we've only got my income to pay for everything so i need to make preparations. Thanks Shelley |

Hello to all I am 33 years old and had severe bowed legs from childhood...last year i began suffering from bad pains in the medial part of the right knee and 6 months later my knee couldnt bear weight anymore ...i underwent a surgary 2.5 months ago and now i am having 2 frames attached to my tibia bones i had another corrective surgary on my left leg a week a go. in first place try to walk alot which is the most important thing for an ilizirov/tsf patient . walking with the frame is making the bone heal much faster and its the best thing to do even when having bad pains and pin tract infections . i recommend to all of you to add to your nutrition the followings : pycnogenol 100MG/Mumyo/clacium+magnezium+vitaminD/zinc=for fast healing of wounds /l-arginin+l-ornitin for muscle tone and fast healing and another most important thing is to get the broken bone exposed to alot of sun and fresh air ...wish u all the best and god bless u all SK |

I never knew such forums existed and in retrospect is may have made my previous TSF experience slightly less awful. I am know 1.5 weeks into my second TSF treatment and all is going much better. I have decided to blog my experience this time, as last time I was too out of it on morphine! My blog can be found at: http://mechanolimb2009.blogspot.com/ Any comments, thoughts and feedback would welcome - I hope that what I have learned from my experiences might help someone else who has go through this. |

Hi Everyone! On 12th August 2008 I had a motorcycle accident, breaking both my tibia and fibula a few inches above the ankle and completely shattering my distal tibia (the lower part of the tibia which forms the top part of your ankle joint). I was fitted with a Hoffman external fixator to hold everything where it was and allow for the shattered fragments to solidify back into one solid lump of bone. I was initially told that once that had healed they could fix the 2 breaks, and that they would have to fuse my ankle due to the bad scarring I would have on my distal tibia. On the 11th December I had the Hoffman fixator removed and an Ilizarov frame fitted. I was changed to a different surgeon the day before the operation and thankfully he was of the opinion that I may get a few years or so out of my ankle before it will need to be fused! (It will need to be fused as it eventually develop severe osteoarthritis) So I had the frame fitted to heal the 2 breaks, and due to there st... read more |

I am trying to track down anyone who has been involved with the clinical trials into stem cell research in conjunction with ilizarov frames. I know there are about 20 of us & have managed to contact a couple but I am interested in tracking down more of us. If you are involved please drop me a line pegleg@fsmail.net. Thanks Simon |

I had an Ilizarov Fixator when I was 12 years old and am now 22. I had mine from my knee to my ankle on my left leg due to a curvature I'd had for a couple of years. I found some websites which discuss this procedure and thought it beneficial to share my experience with other past and present patients. When I had my surgery I then wore the frame for four months, and all I can say is I don't know what I'd have done without my parents. They truly were a godsend. I had a couple of infections which were treated with antibiotics, and I won't lie here, it was extremely painful! Even 10 years on I still get pain in my knee when I've been walking for a long time, and the scars are still visible, although have faded greatly over the last few years. I am curious though if anyone else still has pain and discomfort years on from their surgery? Is this normal? Sometimes I find it worrying, although my pain doesn't last longer than say a day at a time. I don't have it for too long thankfully.... read more |
