Hi
I am Samir from Nepal and I have this illizarov fixator on my right
leg from six months. I was an avid smoker before but after surgery, i
have lessened it to 6-7 pieces per day.. My bone is not healing
according to the x-rays i did some 3 months ago and pain is still
acute. i simply can roam around the house with both the crutches but
in some positions, its very painful. My doctors say it will take some
more three months but my main question is would 6-7 cigarettes a day
would make a lot difference in my healing process?? i am very worried
as I am into bed since 18 months... please help me and please tell me
about precautions and remedies for quick healing..

Living with a TSF

Hi everyone

I am going to have a frame put on my leg in a couple of weeks time and will wear it for about 6 months. I am really worried about it and have found out lots of information about the medical side. But it is hard to find info about the practical side - day to day living with a frame. I would really life to hear from any other women - what do you wear? Have you had your clothes specially adapted? Also, I would love to hear any tips from any frame-wearers about sleeping. Can you get any sleep? does the frame rip your mattress? I know these seem like small concerns, but I am used to the trauma and the pain by now. I'm just thinking of the logistics!

Hello All, my husband has an Ilizarov frame on his lower leg following a fractured tib and fib 8 weeks ago. Frame has been on for 6 weeks and he's doing well but we want to know if anyone has any ideas for keeping the leg warm, especially in these artic conditions. He's mobilising on one crutch when indoors and making steady progress. Any top tips, encouragement and motivation would be welcomed!
Thanks,

anyone needs it. i was going to have it framed but it is rather large
and just takes up too much room.anyone interested can contact me at

Walking with the frame

I have a frame on following an ankle fusion and am also having my leg lengthened. The frame is all lower leg and ankle. I can bend the knee. I walk on it but I'm nver sure how much walking I should do. I thought I was being really good but my last visit to the surgery I was told I had to walk more. This is usually after he has looked at the x ray to see how the break is progressing. The surgeon never says how much I should walk though! He's very vague and says you should walk and walk.

Is there anyone out there that has any idea? Is it distance or just time you spend putting weight through the frame.

Hi guys
I had severe brakes mostly to my knee region after a scooter accident in dec 08. had
shattered the upper part of my tibia and fibula and patella lower part of my femur as
well as a long brake up the length of my femur. Pins and plates were used to stabilise
knee and femur and a frame was put on for 4-5 months for straightening and
stabilization. After i had it taken off, they found one of the fragments of bone in my
knee had come loose and so they operated to reattach it. I did not walk unaided for
atleast 4 months. 3 months after the frame was taken off it was noticed that from my
knee down, i appeared to have angulation of about 10 degrees. At this point in time
they discovered that due to lack of blood supply a large segment of my lateral femoral
condyle had died and was disintegrating, hence the increase in angulation. i was put
on a donor list for a bone graft which is very particular and only been performed once
before in Queensland. It is not co... read more

Cycling with a Lower Leg TSF

This is just a short paragragh to anyone who has had a Taylor Spatial Frame fitted on their lower leg and is unsure of what to expect.

After breaking my lower left leg in a motorcyle accident last year I had some complications with the break and ended up with a TSF fitted between the knee and ankle. This still allowed me movement of my knee and ankle joint. After some discusion with my surgeon he was happy for me to pursue two of my usual hobbies, cycling and camping.

After many weeks of getting used to being on the bike with the frame on and building the strength in my leg back up I decided to undertake a journey From where I live in Wiltshire to Crawley in West sussex, Brighton, The new Forest, Dorchester and finaly back to Chippenham. I was away for 3 weeks and covering some 400 miles, visiting friends on the way and camping when I had nowhere special to be. This was all done on my Saracen moutain bike with panniers containing my equipment and food.

I think the... read more

My boyfriend is having a taylor spatial frame fitted next tuesday. He's the kind of person who just gets on with things and nothing's a big deal but I overheard him today saying to a friend that he wished he'd chatted a bit more to a bloke at the hospital who already had one fitted because he'd like to have been able to ask a couple of questions about level of comfort and everyday living really.. is there anyone who has a frame fitted to their leg currently that would be prepared to have a chat with him? His name is Mark and if you wouldn't mind, would you please email me at sambonner767@hotmail.com with your number and a good time to call you this week. Really appreciated and I hope you're all coping okay with your own frames! Sam

Hi to all
If anyone get to read this post I sure hope it will save him the nightmare I am going through these days .
Bowed legs correction surgery is done because of medical or asthetic reasons, I had mine because of medical reasons and the results were quite bad. If you consider to do this kind of procedure at "Ladisten" clinic in Ukraine I recommend you to take your time and read my experience with this orthopedic clinic :

How much scars from pins of Ilizarov apparatus for each leg?
I get information about Ilizarov-Veklich apparatus in which the rods used not pins. The Doctor said only 3 invisible dots for each leg. The cosmetic reason is important for me so I need to know which apparatus better to choose for less scars.
Please let me know

Taylor Spatial Frame

Hi all
I have posted on here before but thought I'd start a new thread since I now have
the frame on. I've had my TFS on for five weeks now to fuse my ankle and
straighten and lengthen my tib n fib. After just 3 weeks my leg was straight and I
am now in the process of lenghtening it, since strarting this the pain has become
more intense and night times are worse. I get muscle cramps and it's so painful
it wakes me up, sleep is very little at mo but seeing surgeon on 30 September so
will be asking him about this then

Is anyone else suffering more pain at night?

I agree with others who say you have to be strong willed as it can get you down
at times and wish you didn't have it on. Keep the faith and hang on in there.

Regards. Karl

Taking off the frame??

What's the process like to take off the frame and do you recommend going under?
What's the first month like after the frame is off?

In my case, it's been on 3 months, pulled the lowest pin out last week (cause it broke) and it wasn't bad to pull that one out without anesthetic. But it was one of the wires that goes all the way through and it wasn't one that has the plug on it.
