Hi all
my name is karl and I live in the uk. When I was 16 I broke my ankle, tib and fib
at the same time. It was placed in cast and when it came off it was deformed but
I left it as had no pain. Now I'm 42 and suffered great pain and decided to have
surgery, last Friday I had a ilizarov frame fitted, tib and fib broken and ankle
also, the aim is to fuse the ankle and straighten the leg over 6 to 9 months. After
surgery I couldn't believe the pain, after a week in hospital I am now home and
the pain is controlable with painkillers. I'm on cructhes and bearing a little
weight. Getting around is hard but easier day by day. I know it's going to be a
long process but any tips, hints on clothing, footwear and general day to day
living would be great.
Chees Karl

MBT Shoes - Masai Barefoot Technology

I saw a member of my surgeons team yesterday after having my latest x-ray on my recently fused ankle. He mentioned that having a rocker fitted to my shoes might help allow my walking to be more smoother. He also told me about MBT Shoes (Masai Barefoot Technology) that may do the trick too, having the rocker idea built into fashionable shoes. They are usually used for muscle toning. They are not cheap at about £129 but if they make a difference then it could be money well spent. Found a shop yesterday but they were moving location!

Hope to try some out soon and will report back here now I get on.

hello everyone i just had an external fixator for an ankle fusion and 2 other foot fusions i cannot easily remember to correct my club foot due to polio as a child in Nigeria. it's been a full month to today and though i am getting used to it, it gets really annoying not really going out, semi-sequestered to my room and not being able to sleep comfortably :/ i like my sleep, lol. i have been keeping up with the daily cleaning and i am using the exogen bone growth stimulator as well. i am nervous because my fixator is non-weight bearing and i accidentally stepped down it the other day (yikes!). now i don't know if it is just me freaking myself out but i am kinda nervous if did some damage (even had a bad dream about it, lol).
next appointment is in a month to determine when it comes off, counting down the days! but once this heals (however long that will take) i'll be having leg lengthening surgery so another exfix, yay!
i just wanted to see how things are going with others, i ca... read more

Advice For My Son !

Hi, I'm new to this site, my son was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma (bone tumour) Nov 2006, he is now clear of the cancer as we know after having 8 inches of Tibia removed and a Fibula graft put in place, this was secured with plates and screws which then lead to severe infection and removal of the metalwork. He has been using the Exogen System for some time but this has made very little difference. The option now put to us at RNOH Stanmore is the Ilizarov system (of which type we are yet to find out). I've been reading all your stories on here and I find it very helpful, although I won't be showing most of it to my son, don't want to scare him!! Hope you don't mind me getting on to you now and again, i'm sure i'll have lots of questions for you in time. Thanks for reading this. Michaela & Bradley (18yrs)

Having my ankle fused n leg straightened

Hello everyone :-)
I have just visited the hospital today and been advised to have my ankle fused and
my tabia and fibia broken to correct the alignment. Because of this I will be having
a ilizarov fitted. This has all come about because I broke my leg and ankle when I
was 16, I am now 42 and suffering from arthritis in the joint and n constant pain. My
surgeon has advised me that this is the best option and I agree. Just have to wait
for approval from the NHS then I'll be going in for the operation.
Looking for advice and what lifeis like while having the ilizarov on. I've been told I
will have it on for 6 to 9 months.

Any advice much appreciated

Thank you karl

Hi everyone. Had my frame on for 4 weeks now, I am pushing hard for ankle movement which is improving. I do find however that unless i keep my leg raised, or when i stand with my crutches, i feel the blood rush to my leg causing it to really swell and cause pain and restrict my joint movement. Can anyone offer any advice on how to overcome this or what the likely timescale is before these type of symptoms reduce. Regards Andy m

after having a serious fall off a ladder (25ft)on 17th may i suffered a
left tibia/fibular compound fracture to my lower left leg, broken ankle
and broken foot. i have now got a taylor spatial frame on which has been
on for 6 weeks now. everything seems to be ok up to now, just wondering
if anybody knows anything about showering with one on and is it normal
NOT to start walking on it at this stage as it seems pretty common for
people to walk on them by now
cheers

My 13 year Old Daughter is scheduled to have a TSF out on her lower right leg in September. Doing it at Boston Childrens - Dr Kasser.
She is undergoing lengthening (5/8") and straightening. We are told this is a 7 month process.

I have two questions for anyone who can help.

1. Can you speak to the pain - how much? How long?
2. Is there any one piece of advice you wish you had been given prior to the operation. (Regarding sleeping, exercize, pin maintenence, whatever)

Thank you

Exogen System for Sale

I used this system back in 2007 when I broke my femur in a motorcycle accident. It sped up my recovery by about 2-3 months since I was having a "delayed union" on the break. Anyways I have the system in the original bag with the original accessories and gel. I used about 15% of the bottle of gel. If anyone is interested in buying mine I can ship it to them if needed. Please email me at addison@mcsupercenter.com with any questions.
